3Com ‘Netfigurator’ CD-ROM

Brief
3Com’s product range is extensive and technical. 3Com faced the challenge of providing re-sellers with accurate, up-to-date information in easy-to-use format. 3Com approached Avvio Design, who asked E-creation to provide a technical solution. The final application developed by E-creation is very simple on surface but uses a combination of the latest web and CD-ROM technologies to perform complex tasks.
Future-proofing achieves increases solution value
With over 600 current product solutions available to customers, the ‘Netfigurator’ CD-ROM needed to make accessing product information simple with the facility to add future product solutions without costly CD-ROM redevelopment. E-creation developed a C++ application to convert 3Com’s product data from Microsoft Excel documents into a format compatible with Macromedia Flash.
Personalisalisation for better customer relationships
The ‘Netfigurator’ CD-ROM uses eight simple questions to generate a customised interactive presentation of recommended product solutions, including a detailed network diagram of how the recommended products will be connected.
“Media ‘blends’ add value to existing marketing assets
Much of 3Com’s information was held in PDFs (Portable Data Format), so it was essential for the ‘Netfigurator’ CD-ROM to be able to use this information. By using Flash technology for the core application and browser technology for displaying the PDFs, the ‘Netfigurator’ CD-ROM can be distributed by CD-ROM or over the Internet.
